When we left Iguazu Falls, we flew back to Rio where we were met by dear friend Mariane and her wonderful husband Eraldo.  They were so kind to take us all over Rio to the Christ the Redeemer statue high up above the city of Rio, to Copacabana Beach (our hotel was located at that beach too), we drank coconut water out of coconuts.  We did a lot of walking enjoying the scenery and warm evening.  They showed us many places around Rio and the next day we went up Sugarloaf Mountain on the cable cars.  Some of the places we went, Mariane and Eraldo had not been there before either.  So we had a good time seeing things together.  We cannot thank them enough for all the time they spent to be with us for a couple days.  Mariane is a dentist, and we first met her in Blantyre, Malawi in 1998 where she worked in the dental clinic that we had worked in for 6 years in 1974-1980.  She and our daughter Carey shared an apartment for several months while Carey took a break from college classes and volunteered at an orphanage in Blantyre.  Mariane later came to California for some advanced work in dentistry while we still lived there.  We have always tried to keep in touch.  It was really good to get to see her and her husband in Rio.
