Everyone on board the Veendam was happy to find out the Captain changed our itinerary to skip Puerto Madryn, Argentina and go to the Falkland Islands instead.  So from Montevideo, we were at sea for a couple more days to get to the Falklands.  Those islands are quite barren.  Stanley is their town and capital which has a population of 2000 of the 3000 people who live on the islands.  We enjoyed walking along the streets and seeing their cute little houses and going into their stores.  The people there have British passports.  When the college kids go away to school, they usually go to England.  Almost every vehicle on the islands has 4 wheel drive.  It is needed.  They raise sheep and make wool products.  But one of the biggest drawing cards to go to the Falklands is to see the various penguins.  We went to see the Gentoo penguins and the King penguins.  They also have Rock Hopper penguins on another part of the islands, but we did not have time to go see them too.  They are very cute, so it would have been fun to see Rock Hoppers too.  But all penguins are really cute and are so much fun to watch.  Also this was the time of year for them to have their babies, so we saw lots of little ones too.  The penguins mate for life and take turns feeding in the ocean and then taking care of the babies.  They lay one or two eggs.  Krill is the favorite type of food for penguins and whales and other sea life.  It was a cool, misty and windy day at the Atlantic Ocean when we were there, but well worth it to see all the big colonies of penguins.  They are very noisy and smelly in the colonies.
